Grad Student Awards

Overview:

The Fall Awards Celebration event was held Wednesday, November 28 at the Arboretum.  The recipients from Plant Ag are as follows:

Carolyn Brikis, Robert Bruce, Carolyn Dowling, Emily Moeller, & Kendra Sauerteig:  MRS. FRED BALL SCHOLARSHIPS - An endowment fund established in memory of Mrs. Fred Ball provides these scholarships for graduate students in Plant Agriculture with an interest in horticultural science. The scholarships are based on academic achievement and research aptitude.

Fawn Turner: BALL FARM SERVICES LTD AND AGRICO CANADA LTD SCHOLARSHIP- This scholarship is provided by Ball Farm Services and Agrico Canada Ltd to acknowledge their longstanding association. It is awarded to graduate students in Plant Agriculture or Environmental Science who are conducting research on sustainable crop production systems and their application to production agriculture. The award is based on academic standing and applied research potential.

Maria Rojas: JOHN BANDEEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - In memory of the late Dr. John Bandeen, OAC '57 graduate and a faculty member in the Department of Plant Agriculture, this scholarship is awarded annually from funds provided by his friends and associates. This award is available to MSc or PhD students who are conducting research in weed science.

Laura Ford: BASF CANADA SCHOLARSHIP IN PLANT SCIENCE - BASF Canada Inc. provides an annual scholarship for a student in the first semester of a PhD or MSc in Plant Agriculture specializing in plant genetics and breeding; plant physiology and biochemistry; or crop production systems.

Paul Wartman: MARIAN BRENNAN AND HEDLEY HARRISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - This award is provided in memory of Marian Brennan and Captain Hedley M. Harrison and is presented annually to a graduate student in horticultural science.

Jennifer Wilker: BULLICK SCHOLARSHIP IN FOOD GRAIN RESEARCH - In memory of their parents, John and Annie Wannop of Nanton, Alberta, and William and Mary Bullick of Uttoxeter, Ontario, Rose and Clare Bullick provide an award for the initial year of study for a full-time student enrolled in the Department of Plant Agriculture who is conducting research on food grains.

Geoffrey Glum: KEITH R. COLLVER SCHOLARSHIP – I5173- In recognition of the contributions of Keith R. Collver, an award is provided annually for graduate students in Food Science or Plant Agriculture who are conducting research in postharvest physiology, packing, processing or marketing of fruits and vegetables.

Esteban Diaz Castro, Carolyn Dowling, Robert Kerr & Sabrina Westra: TAFFY DAVISON MEMORIAL RESEARCH TRAVEL GRANTS - The Taffy Davison Memorial Fund provides travel grants to registered graduate students in any OAC department conducting research in environmental or agricultural biology, resource development or related fields.

Beatrice Amyotte: DR. G.W. FRIARS AWARD - Dr. Friars makes this annual award available to an M.Sc. or Ph.D. student who is registered in the Departments of Animal and Poultry Science or Plant Agriculture and working in the field of quantitative genetics.  The award will be based on academic standing, and interest in and aptitude for research in quantitative genetics.

Xinyu Chen & Geoffrey Lum: HOSKINS SCHOLARSHIP – I5108 - This scholarship was created in memory of Frank and Gertrude Hoskin for graduate students in the department of Plant Agriculture with an interest in horticultural science.

Hanny Elsadr: H.L. HUTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – I5040 - This is an annual award presented to a graduate student in the department of Plant Agriculture who is conducting research in horticulture.

Hanan Shehata: KASHA SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH TRAVEL GRANTS – T5043 - The fund is established to provide financial assistance to graduate students in the Department of Plant Agriculture to attend meetings and present papers on haploidy or biotechnology.

Ricki Rathwell: MAJOR GENERAL LAFLECHE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – I5047 - Established by Noah Torno, President of Jordan Wines in memory of Major General LaFleche, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduate student in horticulture with high academic standing.

Carolyne Brikis: KEITH AND JUNE LAVER SCHOLARSHIP IN HORTICULTURE – ZMAR210 - June Laver (MAC '40) and in memory of Keith Laver (OAC '40) renowned for their innovations in rose research and development, provide two scholarships for two outstanding graduate students who are registered in any department of OAC. Eligible students will be conducting research relevant to environmental issues and horticulture including for example; ornamentals, vegetables, fruits, greenhouse, water, energy and fertilizer innovations.

Mohd Pak Dek: MANTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – I5055 - An annual award has been established in memory of George Manton and William Douglas Manton for graduate students in the department of Plant Agriculture, with high academic standing in horticulture research.

Andrea Hitchon: W.G. MATHEWMAN SCHOLARSHIP - This scholarship has been established in memory of the late W.G. Matthewman, OAC'34. Selection will be based on experience in the area of entomology through previous work or work experience and academic standing as evidenced by the application to the program.

Amritpal Singh: DR. O.M. MCCONKEY SCHOLARSHIP – E5059 - This scholarship was established by the late Dr. O.M. McConkey, a professor in the Department of Plant Agriculture and a pioneer in grassland research and conservation. It is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Plant Agriculture working in the area of crop breeding and genetics, physiology and management or biotechnology.

Annemarie Van Wely: F.L. McEWEN SCHOLARSHIP – E5151 - In recognition of Dr. Freeman McEwen’s contribution as Dean of OAC from 1983-1990, the OAC Alumni Foundation provides this scholarship to an OAC graduate who is planning to continue their studies in a graduate program in a department or school of OAC.

Annemarie Van Wely: TED MCGRAIL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  - I5172 - In memory of Ted McGrail, past chairman of the Ontario Soybean Growers, his family and the board provide an annual scholarship for students enrolled in a MSc program in Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, Animal and Poultry Science, Plant Agriculture, Environmental Biology, Food Science or Environmental Science who are conducting research on some aspect of soybean production, breeding, marketing or processing.

Robert Bruce: MONSANTO PLANT SCIENCE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP – I5149 - Monsanto Canada Inc. provides this scholarship to an outstanding graduate student in the Department of Plant Agriculture who is conducting research in plant sciences.

Andrea Hitchon: OAC ‘60 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP - Classmates and friends of OAC 1960 have created the OAC Leadership Development Scholarship to honour their 50th anniversary. This scholarship is being awarded for the first time this evening and will be awarded annually to an OAC graduate student whose research focuses on collaborative initiatives linking Canadian interests both at home and globally to food and agriculture sustainability. Students registered in any graduate program offered by OAC who are conducting research that focuses on collaborative initiatives linking Canadian interests both at home and globally to food and agriculture sustainability and who show evidence of leadership skills in academic and/or professional activities are eligible.

Sabrina Westra: ONTARIO SOIL AND CROP IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP – I5294 - The Association has created this annual scholarship for students in the Department of Plant Agriculture or the School of Environmental Science whose research is focused on soil or crop science.  Selection is based on academic achievement, applied research potential and demonstrated leadership in academic and extracurricular activities especially as related to soil or crop science. 

Hanan Shehata: FRED W. PRESANT SCHOLARSHIP – I5680 - Through the OAC Alumni Foundation, a scholarship is provided in recognition of the late Fred Presant, (OAC ’21 and ’23), a leader in the field of human and animal nutrition. This is awarded annually to a student in Plant Agriculture or the School of Environmental Sciences who is conducting research on pesticides and their use in the production of food crops.

Andrea Hitchon: PRIDE SEEDS SCHOLARSHIP – I5046 - In recognition of the contribution of Pride Seeds to the corn industry in Ontario, this scholarship is awarded to a  student in the Department of Plant Agriculture conducting research in corn production or corn breeding.

Hanan Shehata: S.J. SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – I5663 - An annual award in memory of Silas J. Smith of Chatham, Ontario, is provided to students registered in Plant Agriculture or the School of Environmental Sciences who are conducting research in soil fertility, plant nutrition, plant productivity and/or increasing crop yield.

Torin Boyle: SODEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN AGRICULTURE – I5082 - The Soden Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students enrolled in a program at the Master’s level in OAC.

Meghan Griffiths: SOYBEAN RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP – I5083 - A scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in Plant Agriculture who is conducting research in soybeans, field beans or other oilseed crops. The scholarship is
provided to encourage travel to research stations and/or scientific meetings.

Bridgett Visser: GERALD R. STEPHENSON SCHOLARSHIP – I5863 - In 2002, to commemorate their 50th year, CropLife Canada provided a first place prize competition which was won by a team of graduate students from Guelph. The team established a graduate award in the name of their faculty mentor, Dr. Gerry Stephenson, to outstanding students in Environmental Sciences or Plant Agriculture who are conducting research in crop protection.

Holly Byker & Cora Loucks: MARY EDMUNDS WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIPS – A5096 - The Mary Edmunds Williams scholarships were established in memory of the mother of Edmund Cecil Williams, OAC’34. They are awarded to entering PhD students based on academic performance and the recommendation of the department. 

Walaa Mousa: KENNETH G. MURRAY SCHOLARSHIP - In recognition of the work of Ken Murray, OAC '50, this award is provided by J. M. Schneider Inc. to a Graduate student with a minimum first-class ('A') average, who is enrolled in one of the Departments of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, Animal and Poultry Science, Plant Agriculture, Food Science, Environmental Biology or Land Resource Science. 

The night was not just about the students – it was also very much about the alumni, friends and partners of OAC who support our student awards program -
