Plant Sale a hit among green thumbs
Overview:
The concrete facade of the Crop Science Building was temporarily transformed into a field of lush greenery yesterday morning, marking Plant Ag's annual plant sale.
The threat of rain did not prevent crowds from gathering to purchase the enticingly fresh vegetable plants, which filled tables and carpeted the front steps of the building. With nearly all plants sold to a good garden, the sale was deemed a roaring success.
Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, eggplants, peppers, and a medley of lettuces were available at the sale, along with a select few ornamentals.
The event was open to everyone across campus. Buyers ranged from experienced green thumbs, to first-time planters looking to fill their gardens this long weekend. Plant Ag Prof. Clarence Swanton was at hand to provide gardening advice, and effective marketing encouragement for the team.
Low prices saw buyers leaving with full trays for a fraction of the cost of nursery plants. All plants were grown locally in the E.C. Bovey building's greenhouses, on campus.
The event was put on by the department's Social Committee, which is headed by Swanton and a number of graduate students. Money raised from the sale will fund various departmental activities throughout the year.
