Three Plant Ag Genomics Projects Receive $ from Government & Industry
Overview:
Three Plant Ag Genomics projects received funding under the Ontario Regional Priorities Partnership Program announced on Dec. 5, 2019.
- Praveen Saxena, Department of Plant Agriculture: cold tolerance in Ontario hazelnuts; Ferrero Canada: $274,058
- Milad Eskandari, Plant Agriculture: increase soybean yield while improving quality in specific traits like protein to help food-grade industry in Ontario; SeCan: $180,000
- Elizabeth Lee, Plant Agriculture: genomics-based technologies to improve winter wheat breeding; Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO): $400,000. This wheat breeding project was conceived and submitted by the late Prof. Ali Navabi, a former wheat breeder and plant agriculture professor who died this past March. Navabi joined U of G in 2008; since 2014, he held the GFO Professorship in Wheat Breeding.
