2018 NAPB Annual Meeting Daily Schedule of Events

Program for the meeting

Tuesday August 7th
8:00 am – 5:30 pm

Busses leave 8 AM sharp from the parking lot P31 (behind the Gryphon Statue at the corner of Stone Road and Gordon Street)
Pre-meeting tour.  Join us at one of North America’s foremost horticultural research centres - Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (VRIC) and the University of Guelph’s tender fruit breeding program.  Our highly-skilled research team will demonstrate some of our leading edge projects and breeding programs including sweet potatoes, apples, tomatoes and roses.  You will hear about Vineland’s consumer insights & tomato flavour research, which assists to help guide the development of new tomato varieties. At Vineland’s Victoria Avenue Research Farm you will walk through rows of hardy roses and learn about Vineland’s 49th Parallel Collection. Another featured stop will be our stunning apple breeding program as well as Vineland’s sweet potato breeding program featuring a soon-to-be-released new Canadian-bred sweet potato. A guaranteed highlight of the tour will be the walk-through of Vineland’s Collaborative Greenhouse Technology Centre. This pre-commercial scale greenhouse is the largest focused on horticulture research in Canada with a footprint of approximately one acre. This space brings companies, industry and researchers together to foster collaboration and drive economic growth by bridging the gap between innovation and commercialization.

Noon to 5:30 pm Tour of the Elora Research Station.   Grab a box lunch, hop on a bus, and join us for some sunshine and fresh air while we tour the University of Guelph’s main agricultural field research station – the Elora Research Station. Tour stops will include soybean, cereals, dry bean, corn, and Russian dandelion breeding programs, the recently completed “big data” dairy barn, and the DNA Barcoding Biobus. Please wear closed toed shoes.

5:30 to 8:00 pm BBQ at the Elora Research Station.  Join us for a good old-fashioned Canadian BBQ at the station and enjoy the fabulous musical stylings of NAPB’s very own John Clark.  Warning, there may be butter tarts….   Busses will return to Guelph around 8:30 pm, Parking Lot P31.
