Dr. Peter Sikkema received the Distinguished Achievement Award-Education during the annual meeting of the North Central Weed Science Society. According to the nomination, “Dr. Sikkema has been involved in teaching, applied weed research and extension in field crops for the past 25 years at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus. Peter supervises a large team that complete more than 200 field studies per year. During his career, Peter has secured more than $14.1 million in external funding, published 308 peer reviewed manuscripts in various national and international peer-reviewed scientific journals, conducted over 3000 field experiments, authored/co-authored 295 oral/poster presentations at scientific conferences, presented more than 400 oral extension presentations and has obtained more than 125 minor-use registrations through the Pest Management Regulatory Agency.”

Also at the same meeting, Andrea Smith, a graduate student working with Peter won the second place award in the agronomy section for her oral paper presentation. This is a great accomplishment as she had to compete against top graduate students from some of the best agricultural universities in the United States.
